UWC Luxembourg proudly announces the outcome of its 2014-2016 selection round to send the second set of students to UWCs around the world.
Three students – Kevin Sousa, Luc Poveromo and Sabrina Boukellal - selected by the UWC National Committee in 2014 are attending three UWC Colleges in 2014-2016. The three students have been specifically assigned to respectively three UWC colleges: the Armand Hammer UWC of the American West in the US, UWC Mahindra in India and, for the first time, UWC Pearson College in Canada.
The students joined the 2014-2016 class of some 3000 students aged 16 to 19, from different cultures and backgrounds, who take part in a program of the United World Colleges each year. The United World Colleges (http://www.uwc.org/) is an organisation committed to fostering communities based on social development free from all prejudice and intolerance, regardless of socio-economic, cultural, racial, religious or national origins. Education at the UWCs is sanctioned by the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB), a challenging two year curriculum that is widely recognised throughout the world.
The UWC combine the academic excellence of the IB with a strong emphasis on involvement with local communities and on sustainable development, combined with a wide range of cultural and sports activities. These elements all contribute to the stimulation and interest of the UWC education.
The student selection is a well-established process, and is led by the alumni of various UWCs, of various nationalities, resident in Luxembourg. The UWC selection process is split into two parts. One is a selection of students based on their academic achievements and ability to demonstrate a spirit of independence and a certain maturity to represent Luxembourg in international communities, exciting and enthusiastic, where students live together along teachers and college staff. In the second stage of the selection, strictly separate from the first, the UWC National Committee ensures the financing of attendance at a UWC for each of the selected students. Given the basic principle that students are selected strictly regardless of their socio-economic background, the Luxembourg UWC Committee strives to collect funds to provide variable scholarships to the selected students. These funds are collected from various financial sources, patrons, in the Grand Duchy as well as from UWC alumni and parents of current students. Parents of selected students contribute to the system of Luxembourgish scholarships within their means, but are not approached until after the first selection phase has been concluded.
