UWC of the Adriatic

UWC of the Adriatic

Location: Duino, Italy; student profile: 200 students aged 16-19; founded: 1982

Introduction
UWC Adriatic was founded in 1982 by the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia with the support of the Italian government. The fifth UWC and the first outside an English-speaking country, it is 20km from Trieste in north-eastern Italy.

Campus and facilities

The college is integrated into the Italian/Slovene village of Duino/Devin. All students at the college study Italian and our school buildings and residences are spread throughout the village. Our social service programme seeks to further involve us with this community.
The college houses the Scuola Superiore Internazionale di Musica da Camera del Trio di Trieste. Students with a very strong background in classical music are invited to audition for the Maestri in the first weeks of school and if successful to participate fully in the college’s Music Scholar programme.
Teaching facilities include the Bartolomeo Migone library, the Rita Levi Montalcini Science Laboratories, the Erich Hartmann Arts Centre, the Principe Raimondo Auditorium, the Gaspare Pacia Ceramics Centre, and the Mountbatten Academic Centre.

Beyond the classroom

The surrounding area offers remarkable opportunities for cultural, linguistic and physical exploration. Trieste is within easy access and each year the college organises cultural visits to Venice, Padova, Bologna, Mantova, Verona and Ravenna. One of the most popular courses at the school is World Arts and Cultures where issues of cultural identity are explored through the lens of past cultures including Tokugawa Japan, Benin Africa, the Pacific Northwest, Avant-Garde Europe and Renaissance Italy. Full use is also made of our location between the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding mountains (Alpi Carniche and Alpi Giulie) to run a physical activities programme that includes sailing, kayaking, rock climbing, skiing (cross country and downhill) and orienteering.
UWC of the Adriatic runs a comprehensive social service programme which includes work with immigrants, the elderly, children, the disabled, and local schools. In addition, the college is the founding partner of Mondo 2000, a voluntary work association, which organizes cultural and other activities for people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students also participate as cultural ambassadors in the region through multicultural presentations and shows.
